It's no secret that the top superstars in the NBA excel at creating and converting scoring opportunities for their team. From Nikola Jokic's amazing court vision to Steph Curry's elite marksmanship beyond the arc, we can see how different players utilize their strengths to carry NBA offenses. In previous posts, I have discussed the importance of understanding per-possession metrics and providing depth for efficiency-based metrics. In this list, I will be combining those 2 core ideas to create a 1 number metric that approximates the offensive value a player brings to their team.

OVI= PEI* Points Generated Per 100 Possesions

(PPG / (2 * (FGA + 0.44 * FTA +TPG -0.94*ORB)))* (Points per 100 posessions+(Assists Per 100 possesions*2.4903))

The OVI(Offensive Value Index) weighs the efficiency of a player per possession and multiplies it by the points they generate for their team through scoring or assisting the ball.

*Disclaimer: The list is purely based on player performance for the 2020-2021 NBA Regular Season and does not include playoff performances. Injuries, chemistry, coaching, and scheduling all provide context for a player's performance this season but are not accounted for in this metric. This does not provide a definitive ranking for each player but rather provides a very useful approximation for where each player lies with the added simplicity of only relying on a single number.

Incredible work! The amount of time and effort you put into these articles is amazing! However, I would like to include that putting Butler in the top 10 means that you are a certified casual. Furthermore, for some reason, I get the feeling that Krithik predicted the Bucks playing the Lakers in the finals, a prediction that could cement him as a casual if the Nets close out the series. Great work, guys! Look forward to reading the next one!!!
